Ko Hawaiʻi Pae ʻĀina: Understanding Hawaiian Kingdom Sovereignty
Published by Rasta Rooster · KHPA · Big Island of Hawaiʻi
Ko Hawaiʻi Pae ʻĀina — the Hawaiian Archipelago, the Hawaiian Kingdom — is not a relic of the past. It is a living legal, cultural, and spiritual reality that Kanaka Maoli people carry every day. This page is an educational resource, not a political statement. It is an act of cultural honesty.
The Historical Record
The Hawaiian Kingdom was a recognized sovereign nation with diplomatic relations with the United States, Great Britain, France, and over a dozen other nations. Queen Liliʻuokalani was the reigning monarch when, in January 1893, American businessmen backed by U.S. Marines overthrew the Hawaiian government.
In 1993, the United States Congress passed and President Clinton signed Public Law 103-150 — the Apology Resolution — formally acknowledging that the overthrow was illegal and that the Native Hawaiian people never relinquished their claims to sovereignty. The Kingdom was never legally dissolved. It was occupied.
What KHPA Means to Us
At Rasta Rooster, KHPA — Ko Hawaiʻi Pae ʻĀina — is not a political slogan. It is an acknowledgment of truth. The clothing we design under the KHPA banner is made for those who carry that truth — Kanaka Maoli people and all those who stand in solidarity with indigenous rights, land sovereignty, and cultural preservation.
